The investigation into the death of a 19-year-old IIT Bombay student has been transferred to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, following growing concerns from the student's family about the circumstances surrounding his death. The transfer took place on Saturday, September 19, after his parents refused to accept his body.
Student Dies After Examination Incident
The student was a second-year student in IIT Bombay's Department of Energy Science and Engineering. According to IIT Bombay's statement, he was found using a mobile phone during an examination on Friday.
The institute said the student had allegedly uploaded the examination question paper to ChatGPT while attempting to obtain answers. The matter was subsequently discussed with him by the instructor and the department head. IIT Bombay stated that the student was counselled and assured that the incident would not negatively affect his academic career.
Later, the student was found dead in his hostel room.
Parents Raise Serious Allegations
Following the death, the student's parents raised allegations concerning the treatment their son allegedly received at the institute and demanded action against those they believe should be held responsible.
Police registered a case relating to abetment of suicide following a complaint from the family. Reports also say the parents have raised allegations of caste-based discrimination and harassment. These allegations are part of the investigation and have not been established as facts by the police at this stage.
The family subsequently refused to take custody of the body, demanding that the authorities conduct a thorough investigation and take appropriate action.
Crime Branch Takes Over Investigation
With the situation attracting increasing attention, the Mumbai Police transferred the investigation from the local police to the Crime Branch on Saturday evening.
The move places the case under a specialised investigative unit as authorities examine the events leading up to the student's death and the allegations made by his family. The Crime Branch will also have to establish whether there is evidence connecting any alleged conduct or actions to the student's death.
Students Protest on Campus
The incident has also triggered protests at IIT Bombay. More than 400 students reportedly gathered on campus following the student's death, raising concerns about student welfare and the way such incidents are handled by the institution.
The protests led to discussions between students and the institute administration. IIT Bombay subsequently postponed the ongoing mid-semester examinations.
The student's father has also publicly demanded arrests and said the family would take the body to the IIT Bombay campus if their demands were not addressed.
Investigation Will Determine What Happened
The case now involves several questions that investigators will need to examine, including what happened during and after the examination, the nature of the interaction between the student and institute officials, and the allegations made by his family.
While IIT Bombay has said that no disciplinary action was initiated against the student and that he was counselled, accounts from the family and students have raised additional questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Crime Branch investigation is expected to examine these different accounts and establish the facts.
The incident has also renewed discussion about student pressure, academic environments, institutional procedures and the need for appropriate support systems for students. However, the specific circumstances and responsibility for the death remain matters for the ongoing investigation.
